ATP Campus XIV - Decision Factors in Public Lighting (VII) Real Warranties: What to Look for in Manufacturers’ Fine Print

The importance of a comprehensive 10-year warranty with no exclusions for weather conditions, and how the ISSOP certification marks the end of planned obsolescence

ARRE —18/09/2026— With this seventh installment, we conclude the Decision Factors in Public Lighting section of our ATP Campus program. Throughout the previous chapters, we have detailed the engineering required to achieve safe, efficient installations that remain unaffected by corrosion and vandalism. However, in the world of public tenders, every technical promise must be backed by a non-negotiable legal document: the manufacturer’s warranty.

Today, we will examine why a simple number on a technical data sheet is not enough and what a municipal engineer should look for in the “fine print” before awarding a project.

The Fine-Print Trap and Environmental Wear

Today, it is common to find manufacturers of traditional metal luminaires advertising attractive 5- or even 10-year warranties. The problem becomes apparent when reading the terms and conditions of these warranties.

All too often, these standard warranties are filled with exclusion clauses. Manufacturers disclaim liability if a luminaire fails due to “environmental causes,” such as exposure to saline environments (coastal areas), high humidity, paint degradation caused by UV radiation, or dust ingress. In practice, this means that a municipality purchases a product whose warranty becomes void precisely because it is installed outdoors—the natural environment of exterior lighting.

The Engineering Behind a Genuine Warranty

At ATP Lighting, we understand that a warranty is not merely an insurance policy, but a direct reflection of the confidence a manufacturer has in its own technology.

Why are we able to offer conditions that are unique in the market? Because we have eliminated the causes of failure from the very foundation of our designs. By using Engineering Technical Polymers instead of metals, our luminaires are inherently immune to oxidation and galvanic corrosion. By achieving IP66+ sealing and IK10+ impact resistance, we prevent destructive agents from entering the luminaire. And by eliminating the need for grounding through our Class II+ architecture, we prevent widespread equipment failure caused by atmospheric overvoltages.

The result is the longest warranty in the industry: a comprehensive 10-year warranty. This coverage is genuine, with proven performance in highly demanding tropical and coastal climates and, most importantly, with no fine print excluding corrosion or adverse weather conditions.

The ISSOP Certification: A Commitment Against Planned Obsolescence

This level of commitment has made us the only manufacturer of public lighting and urban furniture in the world to be awarded the ISSOP certification (Sustainable Innovation Without Planned Obsolescence).

Awarded by the Feniss Foundation, this certification requires, as an essential condition, that the company’s philosophy be based on respect for the environment and that the warranty offered exceed the minimum requirements established by law, providing a warranty that is “genuine and without fine print.” It also certifies that our products are designed to last, to be easily repairable—with spare parts costing less than a complete replacement—and to be 100% recyclable at the end of their extended service life.

Module Conclusion

Specifying public lighting should not be a leap into the unknown. Assessing mechanical immunity, electrical safety, energy savings (OPEX), and demanding genuine comprehensive warranties are the pillars of responsible and cost-effective municipal investment.
