ATP Campus XIII – Public Lighting Decision Factors (V): Vandalism Immunity: The Reality of Street Impacts

Going Beyond the Standard: Why the IK10 Rating Falls Short Against Extreme Impacts and How ATP's IK10+ Technology Ensures Public Lighting Survivability.

ARRE —31/07/2026— Following our analysis in previous chapters of less visible environmental threats such as corrosion and power surges, we now turn to one of the leading causes of damage and failures in public lighting installations: vandalism and accidental impacts.

The Street Is Not a Laboratory: The Limits of the IK10 Standard

To assess a luminaire's mechanical resistance to impact, the lighting industry relies on the IK protection rating, an international classification ranging from IK00 to IK10. The highest standard rating, IK10, certifies that the luminaire can withstand an impact energy of 20 joules (equivalent to dropping a 5 kg mass from a height of 40 cm).

While this laboratory-tested value may appear sufficient to classify a luminaire as vandal-resistant, the reality in parks, public squares, and high-risk urban areas is far more demanding. Stones, blows from blunt objects, football impacts, and accidental collisions can easily exceed the 20-joule threshold, frequently shattering tempered glass diffusers and conventional plastic covers such as standard polycarbonate or PMMA.

The Domino Effect of a Broken Diffuser

The consequences of an impact do not end with cosmetic damage or broken glass on the ground. Once a luminaire diffuser cracks, its IP ingress protection is immediately compromised. From that moment on, the sensitive LED module and internal electronics are left exposed to rain, moisture, dust, and insects. Within days, the entire luminaire can fail, causing a lighting outage and requiring the complete replacement of the fixture, significantly increasing the municipality's Operating Expenses (OPEX).

Ultimately, evaluating real-world mechanical resistance beyond the minimum requirements of existing standards is a strategic consideration. At ATP Campus, we will continue to shed light on the engineering innovations needed to create truly resilient public lighting systems.

ATP's IK10+ Standard: Extreme Impact Resistance

True to our philosophy of solving urban infrastructure challenges through materials science, ATP Iluminación's R&D department concluded that simply complying with the standard was not enough—we had to go beyond it to deliver a truly definitive solution.

Our luminaires are manufactured exclusively from Engineering Technical Polymers, featuring T5 Thermo-Polymer for the diffusers and S7 Polymer for the housing. Thanks to their exceptional flexibility and molecular structure, our products not only achieve the IK10 rating but significantly outperform it, establishing a proprietary performance category that at ATP we call IK10+.

Our diffusers have demonstrated real-world resistance to impacts exceeding 50 joules—more than twice the energy required by the highest international IK certification. Under severe impact, the polymer absorbs the mechanical energy through elastic deformation and then returns to its original shape without splintering or fracturing, preserving the IP66+ ingress protection of the LED optical chamber.

Protected Investment, Backed by a Real Warranty

Specifying ATP IK10+ luminaires eliminates the recurring and costly maintenance interventions required to replace lighting fixtures damaged by vandalism. This exceptional mechanical reliability is backed by a genuine financial commitment: unlike most manufacturers in the industry, our 10-year comprehensive warranty includes vandalism coverage, providing municipalities with long-term peace of mind while reducing lifecycle costs.
