The IDAE highlights the outdoor lighting renovation project in the Egüés Valley as an outstanding example for its technical quality

The plan includes a point-to-point remote management system and covers rural and urban areas with very diverse lighting and aesthetic needs, which required solutions adapted to each environment

MADRID —26/7/2019— The Instituto para la Diversificación y Ahorro de la Energía (Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy) (IDAE) has selected the renovation project for the outdoor lighting installations in Valle de Egüés, recently completed by ATP, as an outstanding example of an intervention carried out within the framework of its Lighting Program, as they explain it from the institution, "due to its technical quality and the high potential its results have to be replicated across Spain, both at a regional and council level".

Rural and modern urban areas with very diverse lighting and aesthetic needs coexist in Valle de Egüés, a municipality that belongs to the metropolitan area of Pamplona, extending over a 53.57 km² territory, and comprising twelve councils, four lordships, and two large towns with approximately twenty-two thousand inhabitants in total. In 2017, the Council proposed the complete renovation of outdoor lighting with clear objectives: To achieve major savings in energy consumption and maintenance costs, to eliminate light pollution, and to strengthen citizen safety, especially in the rural and most isolated areas of the Valley, through an improvement in the lighting uniformity, brightness and color rendering index.

With these objectives in mind, a decision was made to replace the lighting of the entire municipality with adjustable LED lighting units (3365 units), eliminate unnecessary luminaires and change all control panels. In addition, the implementation of a variable lighting system with presence sensors, which could be adapted to night time, and a centralized lighting management system was considered vital. The different and demanding scenarios that had to be illuminated, which included urban areas such as Sarriguren, with approximately fourteen thousand inhabitants, large avenues, side streets, parks and rural towns, required a very versatile product, capable of adjusting to any scope.

ATP Lighting, which has supplied 2750 lighting units of the 3365 installed, was able to deliver different LED solutions adapted to each environment, from classic ornamental street lights, such as the Villa model, to dress villages without altering their aesthetics, to the three times award-winning luminaire Aire® (German Design Award 2018, Design Plus 2018 and German Design Award 2019), for lighting major roads. In other areas, such as parks or promenades, Alameda, Cónica or Pescador models have been used, emphasizing the style and environment of each location. The company, which is currently commemorating its 50th Anniversary, has covered the majority of frameworks in outdoor lighting.

To meet the requirements of the project, the luminaires include point-to-point remote management systems that enable operation hours and lighting intensity to be adapted to different situations, and which have been equipped with presence sensors that prevent superfluous consumption. All lighting units are equipped with Laminar Heatsink®, a thermal management device designed and patented by ATP, which reduces the working temperature of LED modules by 21 %, and extends their useful life to more than 21,000 hours. In addition, and following engineering standards, the low-rise luminaires have been supplied with Comfort Diffuser®, another innovation of the company, which has the function of mitigating the glare of diode technology, therefore improving the visual comfort of pedestrians and drivers.

The unique characteristics of ATP products have been decisive for the Council and the engineering when selecting the company: The brand is characterized by offering luminaires and lighting columns manufactured with technical engineering polymers, which are completely tight (IP66+), extremely resistant to vandalism (IK10+), immune to corrosion, surges, and antielectrocution. Thanks to their robustness and durability, ATP lighting units do not require maintenance, which is essential in an environment such as the one in Valle de Egüés, with some areas far from large population centers and with a mountain climate that is very aggressive for public lighting, which can cause faults and wear in a very small amount of time.

This is confirmed by the engineer and project drafter, Alberto de Carlos (ESOAL): "We had many maintenance issues here, and we had to tackle them". Furthermore, we wanted this intervention to also have an impact in the future, ensuring that the new luminaires would last not ten, but twenty-five years or more". The maintenance manager of Valle de Egüés, Ángel Zubeldía, who had experience with ATP lighting units in the municipality, also highlights this strength: "These are polymer lighting units, which help us prevent corrosion and potential electric shocks. In the twenty-two years I've worked with ATP products, we've never had to change a column, but we've had to replace quite a few galvanized ones". This safety is reinforced by the brand's commitment, which gives its products a 10-year warranty, one of the longest in the sector.

Results:

Energy savings, reducing light pollution and increasing safety

The lighting installation has obtained an "A" energy rating, with a reduction in electricity consumption of 1530.22 MWh/year (63.54%), and 797.24 tCO2/year of prevented emissions. On the other hand, according to engineering data, luminescence of over 20 luxes, a high uniformity of over 0.50, and a significant reduction in environmental light pollution have been achieved, which has improved the quality of the night sky, and makes it possible to see the stars more clearly.

Thanks to the new lighting and increased uniformity, safe corridors have also been created that take advantage of the paths in the green areas and the lake. Another significant aspect has been the choice of luminaire designs in accordance with each scenario, which blend in perfectly into the different environments of the municipality, and respect its historical heritage.

Note

The Valle de Egüés complete outdoor lighting renovation project has been cofunded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) program "A way to make Europe", and is part of the Lighting Program of the Instituto para la Diversificación y Ahorro de la Energía (Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy) (IDAE).

The project was drafted by ESOAL Ingeniería, and the installation was carried out by UTE (joint venture) "Alumbrado Valle de Egüés", made up by the companies Montajes eléctricos NOI, Electricidad Pipaón, and Telman.
