Sustainable lighting in the Aragonese Pyrenees: efficiency, identity, and night sky protection

Candanchú, Sinués, Esposa, and Aísa move toward an efficient, durable outdoor lighting model fully integrated into the high-mountain landscape.

AÍSA —28/11/2025— The Aragonese Pyrenees continue to advance toward more efficient public lighting that respects their extraordinary natural environment. In recent months, the communities of Candanchú, Sinués, Esposa, and Aísa have completely renovated their outdoor lighting systems with 2200 K LED technology from ATP Lighting, applying Starlight criteria and ensuring a balance between energy efficiency, visual comfort, and night sky preservation.

These actions, implemented as a joint strategy in Jacetania, have consolidated a lighting model that combines adapted design, maintenance-free durability, and a strong environmental commitment in one of the most demanding environments in Spain.

Ultra-warm light to preserve the starry sky

The choice of 2200 K luminaires, with extremely low blue emission, has minimized light pollution and protected nocturnal wildlife. This ultra-warm spectrum also helps conserve the starry sky, an identity-defining resource of the region and a key element for the development of astrotourism.

Lighting design has been carried out with precise control of illumination levels, avoiding over-lighting, resulting in a safe and comfortable nighttime scene without disturbing the natural darkness of the environment.

Energy savings and light quality

The new installations have achieved energy reductions exceeding 70%, significantly improving uniformity and visibility in streets and squares. Each community received a tailored project ensuring uniformity levels above 0.6 and homogeneous lighting, designed to provide comfort and safety without compromising the nocturnal landscape.

Glare-free design adapted to traditional architecture

Aesthetic integration has been crucial throughout the project. In Sinués, Esposa, and Aísa, classic Villa XLA luminaires were installed, blending naturally with narrow streets, stone facades, and traditional spaces. In Candanchú, with a more urban and open character, the Pescador model was chosen, ideal for providing warm and uniform lighting with a contemporary look in high-traffic areas.

A key element in this adaptation is the use of the Confort® Diffuser, entirely developed from T5 technical polymer and designed to reduce the characteristic LED glare without affecting performance or photometry. Its design is based on thorough research analyzing different phenomena of light physics and leveraging the inverse proportionality between surface and luminous intensity to enhance visual comfort while maintaining efficiency.

Thanks to this approach, LED technology can deliver energy savings and high-quality lighting without causing discomfort to road users. Additionally, the Confort® Diffuser softens shadows cast by luminaires’ decorative elements, improving perceived uniformity and contributing to a more balanced appearance of the illuminated environment.

Maintenance-free durability in a high-demand environment

The climatic conditions of the Aragonese Pyrenees require solutions capable of withstanding extreme temperatures, ice, humidity, UV radiation, and constant exposure to external agents. The installed luminaires, made of high-resistance technical polymers, are completely corrosion-proof and prevent internal condensation, ensuring stable operation even during the harshest winter months.

IP66+ sealing and IK10+ vandal resistance support their reliable performance under adverse conditions. In environments like Candanchú, where snowplows and intensive salt use accelerate corrosion of conventional metal poles, technical polymer poles have been incorporated, completely eliminating this risk. Their immunity to salt and chemical agents used in winter maintenance prevents premature deterioration and ensures durability far superior to traditional metal solutions in high mountains.

Total immunity to surges: a crucial advance for high mountains

One of the most significant improvements in these projects has been eliminating a longstanding regional problem: surges caused by electrostatic discharges (ESD).

In mountainous areas, the combination of humidity, dry winds, low temperatures, and atmospheric variations promotes electrostatic charge accumulation on Class II luminaires. In traditional installations with metal enclosures, this charge found a conductive path inside the luminaire, causing discharges that damaged LED modules and electronic equipment, generating recurrent failures and high maintenance costs.

ATP Lighting’s luminaires have completely solved this problem thanks to their enclosures, made entirely of insulating technical polymers. With no conductive parts allowing the discharge to enter, these luminaires are fully immune to ESD. The result is a stable, reliable installation protected against one of the most frequent electrical challenges in high-mountain environments.

A comprehensive vision for high mountains

The renovation of lighting in Candanchú, Sinués, Esposa, and Aísa represents a shared vision: to demonstrate that high-mountain lighting can be achieved with sustainability, efficiency, and environmental respect. Ultra-warm technology, maintenance-free materials, surge immunity, and a design fully adapted to the environment combine to provide lighting solutions that improve community life while preserving the Aragonese Pyrenees’ nocturnal landscape.

With these actions, ATP Lighting reaffirms its commitment to a responsible public lighting model, designed to last decades even in the most demanding environments nationwide.
