Durable and sustainable LED lighting combining efficiency, safety, and respect for heritage and the coastal landscape
CASTRILLÓN —10/02/2026— Castrillón, a coastal municipality in Asturias known for its historic heritage and iconic beaches such as Salinas, has upgraded its outdoor lighting with ATP Lighting´s LED technology. This intervention, aligned with energy efficiency and sustainability goals, aims to reduce light pollution, optimize energy consumption, and preserve the nighttime identity of an area with high natural, cultural, and landscape value.
Innovation, reliability, and respect for the coast
Balancing heritage, landscape, and tourism requires careful urban planning and efficient use of resources. In this context, public space lighting plays a fundamental role: it must respect Castrillón’s historic identity while protecting the integrity of its ecosystems, avoiding impacts on biodiversity and disturbances to the visual perception of the landscape.
A common feature in all ATP Lighting interventions in coastal areas is the need for robust luminaires resistant to salinity. The high durability of the materials ensures reliable installations fully adapted to the maritime environment.
Technical, uniform lighting without visual intrusion
At Plaza de Europa, located in front of the Town Hall, the goal was to illuminate the entire area without placing light points inside the plaza, keeping it open and orderly. Five columns with AIRES S5 projectors were installed, combining different optics and orientations to achieve homogeneous, high-quality lighting.
The intervention is complemented with FOCUS 3 180º bollards, which define landscaped areas and mark pedestrian paths around the plaza. The use of 4000 K light ensures continuity with other existing LED installations, providing consistent performance across the urban space.
Lighting optimization and environmental respect
At the Paseo del Cantábrico, outdoor lighting was upgraded to combine energy efficiency, light quality, and full integration with the coastal environment. The project replaced outdated luminaires, removed reinforcement projectors, integrated the new solutions with existing columns and railings, and avoided any light spill onto the beach.
To achieve these goals, Evolución P luminaires with asymmetric optics and flow control were installed, focusing light exclusively on the promenade and reducing installed power by over 75%. The chosen 3000 K light enhances visual comfort and integrates naturally with the marine landscape, while the uniform distribution ensures safety and a pleasant nighttime experience.
The result is an example of sustainable and functional urban lighting that strengthens the space’s identity and significantly improves the quality of life for residents and visitors.
Cónica TLAC and uniform light for high-traffic areas
In the recreational areas and seaside promenade of La Landa Beach, the goal was to improve lighting with a focus on pedestrian circulation due to high foot traffic.
The Cónica TLAC luminaire with Difusor Confort® was selected, combining minimalist design with excellent light quality. Its longitudinal asymmetric optics highlight pedestrian paths and achieve superior horizontal and vertical illuminance uniformity.
Efficiency and uniformity in mixed-use areas
Near Arnao Beach, the priority was to reinforce sidewalk lighting in primarily pedestrian areas. A horizontal uniformity above 50% was achieved, along with excellent vertical and semi-cylindrical values thanks to the Difusor Confort®.
On Calle La Fábrica, a complete installation including the AIRE S3 luminaire, FV-130 arm, and ATLAS 6 m column was implemented, designed to illuminate the roadway and parking areas evenly. The result is a safe and uniform environment, with uniformity levels above 60%.
Scenic lighting and sea-resistant materials
At the Museum of Las Anclas, located between El Cuerno and Salinas beaches, the intervention aimed to mark exterior pedestrian paths and illuminate access points, sheet metal sails, and the bust of Philippe Cousteau.
FOCUS 3 360º bollards with circular light distribution and AIRES S3 projectors with specific accent lighting optics were used to achieve this. The 3000 K light enhances the warmth of the space and creates a pleasant visual experience in an open, seaside environment.
As throughout the coast, using highly corrosion-resistant materials is essential. The robustness and durability of ATP Lighting luminaires ensure optimal performance even under extreme salinity conditions.
